WHY IS THERE A RISK OF FORGETTING OUR ANIMALS IN THE CAR? WHAT TO DO TO AVOID SIMILAR TRAGEDIES

We always live in a hurry, full of commitments that follow one another at a fast pace day after day. We often repeat the same routine in an automatic and frantic way, thinking and doing a thousand activities at the same time.

It may happen to add in our day, already saturated with commitments, an element that is not part of our routine, for example: a visit of our cat / dog to the vet before going to work.

Even a single small change in the mechanical order of things can easily lead us to forget "events" that are not part of the daily routine, especially if during the journey we receive phone calls and unexpected events that can lead us to a mental disconnect.

Our mind is not always reliable and for this reason we must protect those close to us and those we love, using tricks that allow us to avoid fatal forgetfulness: such as letting our beloved animal die of hardship under the hot sun inside. of our car.

(Of course I am not referring to all those who without a shred of brain, leave their animal in the car consciously and voluntarily on hot days out of ignorance or because they do not come to realize the danger of such a wicked gesture).

In the height of summer, it only takes 15 minutes to bring the passenger compartment of the car to temperatures close to 65 °.

Unfortunately, these serious oversights happen very often.

It has happened to people I know.
It happened while I was at Tyrus, a veterinary clinic of excellence in Terni, to have my cat checked.

I was waiting in one of the clinic's examination rooms and there was silence before a man entered. He screamed desperately while he called the vets: "if he dies I'll kill myself" and cried.

In a moment there were no more walls, pain had permeated the entire clinic: things, people and animals. Time had stopped and everyone with bated breath hoped that the little friend could be saved.

I still feel that feeling of deep despair mixed with guilt. I do not wish it to anyone.

The gentleman had forgotten his dog in the car for 3 hours (15:00 to 18:00).

Unfortunately, no one is immune from forgetfulness.

A period of stress, fatigue, the multiplicity of problems and changes of plans can lead the mind to make serious mistakes. Mistakes that we are convinced we can never make. We are all exposed, without exception. Precisely for this reason we need stratagems that allow us not to be victims of mental blackouts.

Possible tricks to NOT forget the cat / dog in the car can be:

A) Put an object of your cat / dog on the driver's side seat or in the dashboard near the office keys or mobile phone, so we don't run the risk of forgetting our 4-legged friend;

B) Place the mobile phone under the carrier or attach the office keys with a carabiner to the carrier;

In short, we must ALWAYS associate an object that we need immediately with another object of our 4-legged friend.

C) We can equip ourselves and use GPS devices and locators that can be attached to the cage or carrier.

For example, the economical NUT2.

How NUT2 works

Operation is very simple.

1) As soon as it is unpacked, NUT 2 is ready for use. Simply download the app from the reference store (app store for iOS and Play Store for Android), simply by entering the word: NUT as a search.

If you use Android you can also download it directly from here:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nut.blehunter

If you use iOS you can download it directly from here:
https://itunes.apple.com/it/app/nut-find-has-never-been-so/id736738600?mt=8

Don't worry if the application previews are in Chinese. During the installation of the NUT app, the English language will be automatically selected.

2) After installing the application you will need to start it and register as a new user. Registration is required for security reasons related to "ownership of the device". You will then need to enter your phone number, request an activation code (which will be sent via SMS) and choose a password.

3) After completing the registration you are ready to “associate” your NUT 2 tracker with your smartphone. You will obviously need to have enabled the Bluetooth connection.

To carry out the “pairing*”, long press (for about 5 seconds) the button on NUT 2, and wait for the device to detect the peripheral.

4) You can assign a name to NUT 2 and an identification photo of the device or object to which you have applied it.

5) Among the many functions, choose and set the following:

make the phone emit a signal when the NUT 2 moves too far from the device (even if we are the ones who move too far)

6) Set the maximum safe distance beyond which the mobile phone will start emitting an acoustic signal when we move away from the device (Attention that it operates safely only for a radius of 20 meters).

7) Activate and attach NUT2 to the cat / dog collar or carrier.

8) The phone will start emitting louder and louder sounds to signal that we are moving away from the maximum safe distance from our pet.

The device does not integrate a GPS antenna inside, it uses the GPS location of the smartphone.

We try not to be too sure of ourselves and protect our little friends from our forgetfulness with simple and small gestures. Everyone can happen to be victims of a dissociative event and with this certainty that we would have the possibility of finding a way not to commit very serious and deadly forgetfulness.

*The term pairing indicates the process of mutual recognition that often occurs when two Bluetooth devices are connected. It consists in the exchange and verification of an identification code in order to authorize the exchange of data between the devices themselves.
